Guide to Overcoming Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Challenges

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is one of the mandatory security methods used to protect accounts from unauthorized access. However, technical difficulties often arise during its use. Here are the steps to help users overcome common MFA problems.

1. Ensure Notifications are Active on Your Device
If the authentication code does not appear, check your device's notification settings. Ensure that the authenticator app is allowed to display notification pop-ups so the code can be received correctly.

2. Use the Correct Account When Logging In
For student email users, logging into the authenticator application must use the option Work or school account. If you are using the Google Authenticator app, use personal email account to log into the application.

3. If the Authenticator App is deleted
If the authenticator app is accidentally deleted, use another MFA method that has been previously activated, such as an OTP code via phone number. On the login page, select the option:

  • I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now
  • Select the delivery method for the code to your registered number.

4. If your phone is Lost or Damaged
Use the same steps as in point 3. If you have not previously added a backup MFA method, contact the service team immediately to perform an MFA reset.

5. Entering the Authenticator Code Correctly
The code in the authenticator app updates every 30 seconds. Make sure you enter the currently active code, and check the time settings on your device. Your phone's time must be set to automatic to sync with the system.

6. Alternatives If You Don't Have a Mobile Phone
For users without mobile phones, MFA can still be performed using a browser extension on a laptop or PC. A complete guide on how to do this can be accessed via the linktel-u.ac.id/Extension-Auth.

7. Do not delete the Authenticator App
Authenticator apps cannot be deleted after MFA is enabled. This is because authentication will be required periodically, at least every 90 days. Therefore, the app will continue to be necessary even after MFA is active.

8. Add More Than One MFA Method
To prevent future issues, it is strongly recommended to add more than one authentication method. In addition to using an authenticator app, you can link a phone number to receive codes via SMS or phone call.

The addition of this method can be done through:

If the authenticator app cannot be used at any time, select the option Sign in another way or I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now to switch to another previously added authentication method.

By following the steps above, users can more easily overcome MFA obstacles and maintain optimal account security.
